TermRover 1.2.3: an SFTP file browser for iPhone and Android

TermRover 1.2.3 adds an SFTP file browser. Browse, preview, upload and download files on your SSH hosts from your iPhone, iPad, or Android phone.

ReleasesSFTPSSHMobile

The new file browser runs SFTP over the same SSH connection as your terminal. You can browse, preview, upload and download files on your server without a second app or a second login.

I built it because Claude Opus 5.5 is now quite good at making videos. I already prompt it from TermRover, so I want to watch the result on my phone too.

Preview a file, save it to Photos, and paste its path into the agent's prompt.

Open the file browser

Tap the host name at the top of a connected terminal, then tap Browse files.

Good to know

  • The path is a breadcrumb. Tap any folder in the path to jump straight to it.
  • Three shortcuts:
    • here: the current folder of your tmux or Herdr pane
    • home: your home folder
    • uploads: ~/.termrover/uploads, where TermRover puts the photos and videos you attach
  • Copy the path. The copy button next to the shortcuts copies the folder’s path, ready to paste into the terminal or a prompt.
  • Long-press a file to share it, save it to Photos, copy its path or delete it.

Turn on SFTP on your server

The browser uses the tab’s own connection, so jump hosts and Tailscale work the same as in the terminal. Most servers already have SFTP turned on. If yours doesn’t, TermRover shows This host doesn’t allow file access (SFTP is disabled). Add this line to /etc/ssh/sshd_config, then restart the SSH server:

Subsystem sftp internal-sftp

The file browser is free. It is not part of TermRover Pro.

What’s next

This is the first version, and I may build more into it. One idea is yt-dlp integration, because I often download YouTube videos to watch offline.

Also in 1.2.3

  • More reliable detection of tmux, Herdr, Zellij and Mosh across different shell setups.
  • Bug fixes and stability improvements, including a fix for tmux mouse-mode detection on Android.

Update TermRover from the App Store or Google Play to try it.
